Deltapine Announces Class of 11 Varieties
December 14, 2010 Monsanto announced today that two new cotton varieties are being commercialized for the Deltapine Class of 11.
“After successful launches with broadly-adapted varieties in the Class of 09 and Class of 10, we are pleased to offer DP 1133 B2RF and DP 1137 B2RF, two products targeted to more specific regions of the Belt for high-end performance,” said Keylon Gholston, Deltapine Products Manager at Monsanto. “These two Class of 11 varieties were tested in the New Product Evaluator program and demonstrated outstanding potential to improve yield and fiber quality performance in key markets.”
Tested as 09R555, DP 1133 B2RF is a mid-maturity variety with smooth leaves that showed its best performance in the lower Mid-South, east Texas and parts of the lower southeast. It offers a great combination of yield potential and fiber quality. When planted in vigorous growing conditions, DP 1133 B2RF is a bushy-type plant that will need PGR applications beginning at the 8 to 10-node stage. It is typically easy to manage with PGRs. The plant height is similar to DP 0912 B2RF and it appears to handle stress conditions very well, having done so in the Mid-South in 2010.
In the lower Mid-South DP 1133 B2RF has demonstrated better yield potential over stacked competitors, both in the extremely wet conditions of 2009 and in the hot, dry conditions of 2010. In two years of evaluations in east and central Texas and in the Southern Rolling Plains, DP 1133 B2RF has shown better yield potential than the leading competitor variety. It also offers fiber quality equal to the leading FiberMax variety but a better total crop value due to higher yield average.
“I planted DP 1133 B2RF on my best irrigated ground and it yielded exceptionally well for me, around 1,600 pounds an acre,” said Donnie Vandeven of St. Joseph, LA. “It looked good all year long. Anytime I can get a cotton variety to produce like DP 1133 B2RF did, I want more of it. I’ll be planting more DP 1133 B2RF in my fields next year.”
Tested as 09R619, DP 1137 B2RF is mid-maturity variety with smooth leaves that has demonstrated outstanding yield potential for dryland situations in the upper southeast, the dryland acres of north Alabama and the dryland hills of the Mid-South. This variety has excellent early-season vigor when planted in good growing conditions, but its best fit is the droughty regions of the Carolinas and North Alabama. Under stress conditions, DP 1137 B2RF can develop desired stalk size and produce outstanding yield. It will need some moderate to heavy PGR management early in its growing stage if good growing conditions occur.
In two years of evaluation on commercial farms, DP 1137 B2RF has shown better yield performance than the leading stacked competitor varieties, and equal performance with the Deltapine Class of 10 varieties for this region.
“I had DP 1137 B2RF planted in my fields two years in a row in very different growing seasons and I’m glad to see this variety make it to market because it is a great cotton variety for my region,” said Thomas Sugg of Snow Hill, NC. “We called DP 1137 B2RF “The Beast” because of the way it came out of the ground. DP 1137 B2RF is good-looking cotton that graded well and handles the heat better than most varieties. You could see it in the fields around noon time, when all the other cottons were wilting a bit, DP 1137 B2RF stood tall. It also outperformed competitor varieties planted in the same field this year by over 300lbs/acre.”
Farmers can be confident that the Deltapine Class of 09, Class of 10 and new Class of 11 varieties were released and commercialized only after they proved their high performance potential in our New Product Evaluator (NPE) trials across the Belt.
“The NPE program is a new variety program unlike any other in the Cotton Belt and with the solid support from our NPE farmers we are pleased to release these two exciting Deltapine Class of 11 varieties,” said Gholston.
