Texas AgriLife Extension to Hold Profitability Workshop
Texas AgriLife Extension will be holding a profitability workshop on Tuesday, December 14th from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. The workshop will be taught by Jackie Smith, Jay Yates and Jeff Pate. The information covered will be of value to producers and agricultural lenders.
The primary objective of this workshop is to provide the tools and the data along with the skills to evaluate the potential profitability of alternative crops for the 2011 crop year. Each participant will receive a handout that includes a printed copy of the presentations and a set of the spreadsheet crop budgets. Also, each participant will receive a CD which will contain an Excel file with all the budgets and breakeven tables as well as a number of supporting files and web addresses to help each participant in using the spreadsheet on their own computer.
During the workshop, we will demonstrate the spreadsheet budgets that are specifically designed to assist producers in estimating their own costs and quickly comparing the profitability of alternative crops. The spreadsheet can be used to compare various crops but much of the time in the workshop will involve comparing dryland cotton with dryland sorghum and irrigated cotton with irrigated corn and sorghum. Jay Yates and Jackie Smith will be demonstrating the spreadsheet and leading the discussions to help the participants become comfortable with taking it home to do their own comparisons on their own computers with data more specific to their farm.
We will look at input cost estimates and outlook for crop prices. Jeff Pate will address the changes in input costs such as fertilizer and fuel. Jay Yates will present the cotton market outlook and preview the grains and suggest some possible pricing strategies with the current market expectations.
The workshop will be held at the Hale county Extension office, which is located at 225 Broadway. (Enter the building through the door on Austin Street.) The registration cost is $10 and includes lunch and refreshments. We will have 14 computers available for participants to use. Because of this we will limit the class size to 28. Please call our office at 291-5267 byDecember 10th to reserve your spot and to assist us in meal planning.
This workshop supported by the Cotton State Support Committee.
