Tennessee State Rule Prohibiting Use of Older Dicamba Products Begins May 15

The deadline for a Tennessee state rule prohibiting the use of older generic formulations of dicamba in cotton or soybean is quickly approaching, says Larry Steckel, University of Tennessee Extension Weed Specialist, in a recent UTcrops News Blog post.

The state rule will be in effect from May 15 to October 1.

“The dicamba formulations prohibited in this time frame include Banvel, Clarity, Sterling Blue, Strut, and others,” writes Steckel. “This rule is designed to stop the use of the older, more volatile dicamba formulations later in the growing season. After May 15, the only dicamba formulations that can be used as burndown are Engenia, Tavium and XtendiMax. Of course, these lower volatile formulations are still legal to use PRE and POST in Xtend soybean and cotton varieties.”

More details on the state rule – as well as best management practices for dicamba stewardship – can be found at the Tennessee Department of Agriculture’s Dicamba Application Reference List and in the 2021 Tennessee Weed Control Manual.
