USDA Deregulates Dicamba-Tolerant Technologies for Cotton and Soybeans

The USDA has announced its decision to deregulate Bollgard II XtendFlex cotton and Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans – Monsanto’s dicamba-tolerant trait technologies for those crops.

USDA’s decision will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.

These new weed management solutions – which have been in development for ten years – will provide cotton and soybean growers with more consistent, flexible control of tough-to-manage broadleaf weeds as part of the Roundup Ready Xtend Crop System.

“Weeds represent a key pest to agriculture operations around the world and limit crops of much-needed nutrients, sunlight and access to available water resources,” said Robb Fraley, Monsanto’s chief technology officer. “We’re excited to provide additional tools that can help improve efficiencies on farm and support farmers in bringing more food to harvest for consumers.

“The dedication, effort and number of people that have touched this project has been extraordinary, and demonstrates our continued commitment to bring a range of agriculture solutions to farmers,” he added.

To prepare for commercialization, Monsanto has trained more than 7,500 growers, retail partners and stakeholders on weed management with the technology.

Commercial intentions will be announced soon. Final approval of herbicide products for use in the Roundup Ready Xtend Crop System is still pending with the Environmental Protection Agency.
