Crop Progress: Overall, A Positive Week for Cotton

Sometimes you take your victories when you can, even if they’re small wins. According to USDA’s Crop Progress report for the week ending July 10, cotton showed some positive movement in the overall crop.

Squaring is now reported in 57% of the U.S. crop – up 13 percentage points in the past week and just shy of the 5-year average for this date. Overall, 11 states are now ahead of their respective averages, led in the past week by Missouri and Tennessee (both up 22 points).

Boll set can be found in 22% of the crop – up 9 percentage points and 4 points ahead of the 5-year average. Nine states are currently ahead of their respective averages.

The report also showed slight improvement in crop condition in the past week, as good/excellent ratings climbed to 39%, fair climbed to 34%, and poor/very poor dropped to 27%. Dryland areas in need of moisture are still suffering as poor/very poor ratings for Texas (41%), Tennessee (28%), and Missouri (19%) continue to climb.
