Crop Progress: Planting Progresses with Open Weather Looming

As weather continues to warm, cotton growers across the Cotton Belt are keeping planters rolling. The USDA Crop Progress report for the week ending May 8 shows that 24% of the U.S. cotton crop for 2022 has now been planted – up 8 percentage points in the past week and right on the 5-year average for this date.

All cotton producing states are now active, with state-by-state plantings ranging from 5% in Oklahoma to 98% in California. In all, eight states are currently ahead of their respective 5-year averages. Warm, open weather predicted across most of the Cotton Belt in the coming week should allow planting activity to substantially increase by the next report.
